Mumbai, Jan 6 (IANS) Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar struck his 80th first-class hundred and with Wasim Jaffer took Mumbai to 272 for three on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Baroda at the Wankhede Stadium here Sunday.
Tendulkar, who is playing domestic cricket as preparation for the home series against Australia, shared a 234-run stand with former India opener Jaffer (137 not out) to set the foundation for a big score.
The 39-year-old nudged one to long leg for a couple to bring up his 18th hundred in Ranji Trophy. Soon after, he was bowled by Murtuja Vahora (2/50) in the 86th over of the day.
Tendulkar is now one short of the Indian record held by Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 81 first class hundreds. There was a sizeable crowd in attendance to watch the master bat.
In the other quarter-final in Indore, Services dismissed Uttar Pradesh for 134 and ended the day at 154 for five.
Services’ medium-pacer Shadab Nazar picked up five wickets before Rajat Paliwal (36 not out) and Sarabjit Singh (31 not out) steadied the ship after the team lost five wickets for 97 runs.
Jharkhand made 195 for three against Punjab at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur. Opener Rameez Nemat was unbeaten at the crease on 97 alongside Ishank Jaggi (50 not out).
In Rajkot, Saurashtra were 272 five at stumps against Karnataka. Opener Shitanshu Kotak (46) and Sheldop Jackson (83) were the main contributors to the score.
