Yo Yo Honey Singh buys Toronto-based team in World Kabaddi League

Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh is the latest Bollywood celebrity to buy a team in the World Kabaddi League.

“I follow all high action sports and World Kabaddi League is great initiative to contemporize kabaddi and position it as a professional sport,” the rapper said in a statement released Friday. “I urge all my fans to extend their support in making World Kabaddi League one of the biggest sporting events.”

According to the Press Trust of India, Singh has named his team ‘Yo Yo Tigers’ and it will be hosted in Toronto.

The World Kabaddi League, which is scheduled to kick off in August with an extravagant London-based event, marks the first international kabaddi league to come out of India. The league will follow a five month season and play in circle style, which is the most popular kabaddi format played in 26 countries across the globe, according to the statement.

At a press conference in Delhi, Singh also announced he’ll soon release a title track for his team.

“I have already planned to roll out my next title in support of my team. It will not only be a peppy number but will be a source of encouragement to my fellows,” he said.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also recently endorsed the league by purchasing a team and encouraging his fans to support the sport.

World Kabaddi League commissioner, Pargat Singh, said he’s “delighted” to have so much support from Bollywood as they gear up for the global launch in August.

“After Akshay, Honey too joining the Kabaddi bandwagon….World Kabaddi League has definitely gained momentum,” Pargat said in a release.”Honey Singh is a youth icon and with his endorsement kabaddi will surely be seen in a new and modern outlook attracting younger audience.”
