Of the more than 100 Bollywood stars who came to Vancouver for the Times of India Film Awards, up and coming starlet, Rekha Rana, was one of the few who extended her stay to don a tourist cap.

In the week following the April 4th to 6th awards weekend, Rana explored British Columbia with a walk over the Capilano Suspension Bridge, a ride on Whistler’s Peak 2 Peak gondala, a full day in Victoria and, of course, a stroll along Vancouver’s trademark shopping strip, Robson Street.

“It’s a beautiful city,” Rana told Vancouver Desi from her downtown hotel room before she returned to India last week. “The people here are so polite, they are so full of manners.”

But her extended stay wasn’t all fun and games — she was also promoting her latest film by Kumar Raj,” Tara: The Journey of Love and Passion,” which was officially released at the end of April.

The film follows Rana in the title role as Tara, a gypsy girl who realizes the reality and darkness in her village of Tanda, 300 kilometres outside of busy Mumbai. As a result, she tries to lead the villagers to survival, but is only faced with prejudice and cast away from the village.

“It’s a story about each and every woman in India or any woman in the world,” said Rana. “How she takes decisions, and how she leaves everything and how she stands for the right things… she is an ordinary woman, but (it’s about) how she survives in an extraordinary situation.”

Regularly a theatre actress, her role in the breakthrough Bollywood film is “very close” to her heart because of the message that comes with it, she said.

“Everyone says India is the next superpower,” said Rana. “When you see Mumbai you will see all the lavishness and you will see richness and everything is there, but as soon as you go, you know 200 to 300 km away … then you will see poverty, hunger, death, thirst, no electricity — so we are trying to show that.”

Rana equated the film to the likes of “Slumdog Millionaire” and how it illustrates the realities of India.

“In this movie we are trying to show a different area of people who … live in India,” she said.

Although the village people don’t live the extravagant life of those in Mumbai, Rana learned a lot from working with them.

“They are the most colourful people that I have ever come across,” she said. “They have nothing, but still they are so happy.”

Rana, who has acted in more than 75 theatre shows, was named best debut actress at the 2013 Jaipur International Film Festival for her role as Tara.

“The jury was, like, Oscar winning producers, national award winning directors, producers and some producers from Hollywood,” she said excitedly. “And they all selected me as a best debut actress — it’s a big thing for me really.”

“(Now) I want more awards — so maybe next year I need a TOIFA or a FilmFare (award),” she said with a laugh.
